NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (April 23, 2025) – On Wednesday, April 23, New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on the future NBU headquarters site, advancing a long-planned effort to enhance customer service, consolidate and streamline operations and grow alongside the community it serves.
The new headquarters will include modern customer service areas, expanded customer meeting and customer parking space and upgraded technology infrastructure to support NBU’s electric, water and wastewater services. By eliminating the need for residential and commercial customers to visit multiple sites and improving collaboration among NBU departments, the facility will function as a true one-stop shop for NBU customers.
Located on a 77-acre site at 5467 FM 482, at the intersection of IH-35 and Engel Rd., the future headquarters will bring to life recommendations made in a 2017 Facility Master Plan which outlined the need for a single, purpose-built facility to unify NBU’s administrative, customer-service and field service operations. This plan is coming to life after years of increasing strain on space, rising operational inefficiencies and customer impacts caused by having employees spread across aging and disconnected facilities.
After evaluating more than 30 potential properties, NBU purchased the current site in the fall of 2023. The location was selected based on its accessibility, scale and ability to support long-term operational goals
“This is more than a construction project—it’s a commitment to our customers,” said Ryan Kelso, NBU Chief Executive Officer. “It reflects years of planning to support our customers more efficiently, prepare for future growth, and ensure that every ratepayer dollar is spent with long-term impact in mind. By bringing NBU services together under one roof, we’re making it easier to get support, solve problems and deliver the level of service our customers deserve.”
NBU’s existing facilities include the Main Plaza office downtown, the Service Center on FM 306, the Customer Solutions Center at 1488 Seguin St. and numerous field operations facilities around the service territory. The Main Plaza and the Service Center have both been sold to the City of New Braunfels and will be repurposed for future economic development. NBU is currently leasing them back from the city while construction on the headquarters is underway.
“As stewards of this community’s resources, our responsibility is to plan wisely for the future,” said Wayne Peters, President of the NBU Board of Trustees. “It’s not just about where we work, but how well we serve. This investment ensures our customers continue to receive reliable, responsible service as our city grows.”
Construction is expected to be completed in 2027. The project budget is estimated at $184 million and will be funded as part of NBU’s long-term capital improvement plan. The project includes a 142,465-square-foot office building, a 25,051-square-foot equipment building, a 60,366-square-foot warehouse and a 23,168-square-foot maintenance building. Day-to-day operations will continue during the transition with no expected service interruptions.
