NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (Jan. 2, 2025) – New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) is taking steps now to ensure reliable and resilient service during potential severe winter weather conditions.

NBU’s winter readiness efforts include strengthening critical infrastructure by adding insulation, weatherproof enclosures and freeze protection measures to vital systems. Additionally, NBU also prioritized tree trimming. Ice can weigh down tree branches and cause them to make contact with power lines which is a common source of winter disruptions. Customers can request tree trimming near power lines on NBU’s online portal.

Customers can protect their homes and families by sealing windows and doors and ensuring heating systems are in good working order. Insulating pipes during freezing weather helps prevent them from freezing. Stocking essential items like food, water, flashlights and blankets can provide peace of mind during severe storms. NBU provides resources to help customers prepare for the winter season, including step-by-step guides for safely shutting off water valves and tips for conserving energy. Visit nbutexas.com/winter-freeze-tips/ for more information.

“Winter weather can bring unexpected challenges, but preparation is key to staying safe,” said Mark Steelman, Chief Operations Officer at NBU. “Our crews are dedicated to maintaining and restoring services as quickly and safely as possible during storms. We encourage our customers to take this time to ready their homes for everyday winter conditions and the possibility of severe weather. Our goal is to work together with the community to face winter challenges.”

To keep customers informed, NBU offers real-time outage updates through its online outage map, available at nbutexas.com/outages. Customers can also sign up for text, email or phone notifications to receive timely alerts about service interruptions.
