Community Smoke Test Program

Community Smoke Test Program | New Braunfels Utilities

What Is a Smoke Test?

Smoke testing is a safe, non-invasive way to locate leaks, cracks, and improper connections in the wastewater system. Crews introduce a non-toxic, non-staining smoke into sewer lines through manholes.

The smoke follows the path of air and escapes through any openings, making it easy to spot defects that may not be visible otherwise. This process helps us pinpoint issues quickly without digging up yards or streets.

Smoke testing helps protect both homeowners and the larger community. By locating illegal connections, broken pipes, and leaks, we can reduce system overloads, prevent wastewater backups, and protect local waterways. This proactive approach also helps keep utility costs lower by avoiding major emergency repairs.

Keeping Our Wastewater System Safe and Reliable

Each year, New Braunfels Utilities conducts community smoke testing throughout our service area to help protect public health and maintain a reliable wastewater system. This process allows our crews to identify hidden breaks, defects, and plumbing issues that could allow stormwater or groundwater into the system. By finding these problems early, we can make targeted repairs, reduce overflows, and prevent costly damage before it becomes a bigger issue for our community.

What can I expect during a smoke test?

Before testing begins, nearby homes and businesses will receive a door hanger with important information. You do not need to be present during the test. Crews will open manholes in streets and easements and introduce smoke into the system. In most cases, smoke will exit through roof vents, which is completely normal. If smoke enters your home, it may indicate a plumbing issue that should be addressed.

You will receive notice from us before testing begins. If anyone in your household has respiratory conditions or mobility limitations, please notify us in advance so we can take extra precautions.

Is smoke testing safe?

The smoke used during testing is non-toxic, non-flammable, and will not leave residue or stains. It may have a slight odor, similar to incense, but it is not harmful. If you see smoke during testing, there is no cause for concern unless it enters your home. If that happens, please leave the building and contact us immediately.
