Keeping Trees and Power Lines Safe | New Braunfels Utilities

Keeping Our Community Safe and Connected
Trees play an important role in our local environment, adding beauty, shade, and character to our neighborhoods. But when branches grow too close to power lines—or roots interfere with underground infrastructure—they can become a serious safety risk and a leading cause of power outages.
New Braunfels Utilities trims trees to protect people, property, and essential services. This work helps prevent outages, keeps our crews safe, and ensures reliable electric service for the entire community.
Why Tree Trimming Matters
When trees make contact with live power lines, they can cause sparks, outages, and dangerous situations. Roots can also interfere with underground utilities, including water lines and other critical infrastructure.
Tree trimming is a proactive safety measure. The annual cost of pruning and removal is significant which is why we focus on preventative maintenance. Most trimming is done to maintain proper clearance around lines, helping prevent interruptions before they happen.

Tree Trimming FAQs
Before You Plant!
Before planting any tree or digging in your yard, it’s important to know where utility lines are located—including underground services.
To locate underground electric, cable, telephone, and gas lines, call 811. This free service helps prevent accidental damage and keeps everyone safe. Be sure to call at least two business days before you plan to dig.
Planting the Right Tree in the Right Place
Choosing the right tree and planting it in the right place ensures healthy growth and reduces future maintenance. Consider the tree’s mature size, root spread, and sunlight requirements. Avoid planting too close to buildings, power lines, or underground utilities, and select a location with suitable soil and drainage. Proper spacing between trees and other plants helps prevent competition for resources and allows for easier access for pruning and care.
